Dear Friend, I have been a part of Discovery School for over 20 years. In that time, I have witnessed hundreds of students become successful academically and in their future educational and life endeavors. The key to their success is grounded in the students' beliefs about their capabilities to affect events shaping their lives. Discovery School fuels their confidence through the use of Positive Discipline and by providing an environment where students are encouraged to take risks. A recent graduate of Discovery School is continuing his schooling at Saint George's School where he is an excellent student. When asked about his academic success in a college prep atmosphere he said, " Discovery helped me discover myself". It was at Discovery School where he finally realized his potential and believed in himself as a learner. We provided him with a curriculum based on his individual development as a learner, and that made a the difference for his successful transition to a college prep school. Many of us think of curriculum as the academic skills we learn in school. In fact, the word "curriculum", as derived from its Latin origin, means literally "to run a course". Curriculum encompasses "not only experiences occurring in school but experiences that are unplanned and undirected, and experiences intentionally directed for the purposeful formation of adult members of society" Many schools' curriculums are solely focused on academics in a controlled setting. In contrast, our curriculum encompasses not only the academics, but experiences and skills that lead students to the realization that they are responsible for their learning and how their choices affect lives. Discovery School has touched many lives through its 25 years. The Board of Trustees, faculty and staff have not waivered in their commitment to provide an educational environment to empower the voice of the child through: small class sizes, individualized attention, and enriched curriculum. I truly believe in the mission of Discovery School, and the students who grow and learn here every day.
